We met Kayla and Collin back in 2018 when we were planning Collin’s sister’s wedding in Chicago. I feel like it happens all the time, when one sibling gets engaged the other happens to get engaged near the same time! So lucky us, we had a long time to get to know this adorable duo and we knew their wedding would be uniquely them, just like Sawyer & Austin’s wedding reflected their personalities.
Picking a venue was easy for them! There is an adorable one-of-a-kind venue in Michigan called Sundance Studios. Every time you turn your head, you have something super cool and fun to look at. They have vintage dressers, mismatched iron and crystal chandeliers, floral wallpaper and a gorgeous backyard. to be used for ceremony and cocktail hour.
Kayla and Collin have a history with Crane birds so they had their their friend design the save the date with a crane in the middle, it was the inspiration moving forward. The customized napkins and custom backdrop for the ceremony were adorned in cranes, as were the paper origami crane escort cards that were hung from an old boat. Some of the water glasses even had cranes on them if you looked at the etching around the sides!
So let’s take us through Collin & Kayla’s wedding day. They started in airbnbs so they had enough room for their wedding party to sleep with them. They rented an old white Volkswagon Bus for the weekend so of course they decided to have Kayla drive it up to Collin’s airbnb for their first look. Collin was waiting on the side of his road in his lovely off-white suit and helped her out of the driver’s seat. Kayla wore a dusty blue dress with light beading on the top and a soft tulle bottom. She is the perfect example of someone who can rock a colored dress and make it look so natural!
The entire wedding party headed over to the venue to take pictures in the backyard before the guests started arriving. When the ceremony was about to begin, guests were invited under the greenery lined tent in the backyard. One of our favorite parts of the ceremony was the Unity Song. This was a spin off of the typical unity candle ceremony where Austin, Collin’s brother-in-law led a song where everyone were to sing along. They had music sheets to pass out with the programs so guests knew the exact words. But most of us knew the tune, which was “In My Life” by the Beatles. Then it came time for the vows. Collin wrote Kayla his vows into a song and surprised her with singing it on a guitar, as she held the lyrics in his notebook. Cue the tears, it was one of the cutest things we’ve ever experienced.
Cocktail hour was in both the backyard and inside. They had a bags game, giant Jenga and other fun activities to do in the yard. Truffleberry Market provided all of the inventive appetizers that were passed among guests. As guests were invited to grab their 3D crane shaped escort cards, they entered into the dinner room which was so colorful, warm and ready for a memorable evening. Revel Decor designed a gorgeous string backdrop behind the head table which was in different shades of orange. Blue was the other primary color, which worked perfectly with Kayla’s dress, and Collin’s tie!
They had table numbers made out of black letter boards, velvet napkins, round metallic menus, and mismatched dinnerware. It all was extremely cohesive and absolutely gorgeous. After dinner, guests were invited to the dancing room which was across the hall. There was also a ice cream bar stand where guests could pick the toppings on their mini ice cream bar, perfect for a July wedding! Highly recommend Dipsy Desserts! They also brought in mini sweets from Chicago from Sweet Mandy B’s and there was a pretzel bar with multiple dipping flavors.
Guests were able to enjoy the cool summer air under the ceremony tent where they played old films on a projection screen. This was perfect for the little kids, or adults who needed a break from the dance party! There was plenty of lounge furniture to relax on.
The night went so quick, but we will never forget all the exquisite attention to details that went into a wedding made especially for Collin and Kayla. We can’t wait to follow along in your future journey, congratulations once again!
