Have you been scrolling through Pinterest or wedding blogs and love those WOW sparkler moments? Read some of our dos and don’ts about sparklers so you can have the perfect photo op while being realistic with the logistics of your big day!
Buy long stick sparklers! You don’t want anyone’s dress catching on fire and you also want the sparklers to burn long enough to capture a few photos. 36″ are our recommendation!
Distribute the sparklers directly from the boxes. Many times the sparklers will be covered in a dirty gray residue that will stain hands. Take all the sparklers out of the boxes and make sure to wipe down the handles (where you hold).
Consider doing a sparkler moment earlier in the evening! You can mock your fake exit with your wedding party. This way, your professional photographer has the opportunity to capture the sparkler picture. Your guests are also less intoxicated so it’s a touch safer.
…Forget to have a place to put the sparklers after they’re done! Consider getting a bucket of sand for guests to place the sparklers because they will be hot and cannot go straight into a plastic garbage liner.
Check with your venue to understand any restrictions with sparklers. Most venues will not allow sparklers inside for obvious reasons, but some venues also do not allow sparklers on the grounds at all.
Use a regular lighter, it will take forever to start! A cigar lighter is ideal because of the strength of the flame.
Save a few sparklers if you want to write a word in the air. Many times couples make the outline of a heart or write a short word that means something to them.
Forget to designate someone to take the photo! Most times photographers are gone by the end of the evening so if you’re doing a sparkler “exit” you’ll need to pick a photographer.
Tell guests to light their sparklers off of each other. That’s the fastest way to get every single sparkler going!
Do your sparkler picture near a lot of light. The photos look much better if there is not lighting in the background.
…Something in the middle of your guests! Whether that be going down a sparkler tunnel, kissing in the middle of all the sparklers or doing a fun twirl.
….Forget to know where you’re going after the exit! Are you getting taken away in a getaway car? Are you looping back around into the venue? Are you running down the street and then realize you have to awkwardly run right back? Think of this in advance!
Put the sparkler moment in your timeline if it’s not at the end of the evening! You want to make sure your vendors know when it’s going to happen so the photographer is ready, the caterer is not delaying food service, or the DJ does not make an important announcement during.
…Forget a first aid kit JUST in case something were to happen. If you have a wedding planner they should have enough first aid on hand.
